“The difference between a broken community and a thriving one is the presence of women who are valued.”
Michelle Obama

Arts / Wellbeing / Education

At When Women Gather, we want women to thrive. We want all women who come to our events to feel valued and heard and to leave knowing they are a vital part of our caring and ever-growing community.
We pride ourselves on building strong and lasting partnerships with other organisations. Through our project work in the areas of arts and wellbeing in Nottingham, When Women Gather has established a key role in signposting to essential services offered by organisations, such as Nottingham’s Women’s Centre, Women’s Aid and CAMHS.

We seek to support women in our communities in a holistic way, through engaging and participatory arts and wellbeing-focussed workshops and events. We use music, dance, drama and art to provide opportunities for all women to ‘connect’ meaningfully with each other, and to explore the many realms of self-expression through the arts. We want to tackle the growing epidemic of loneliness and declining mental health.
We also provide bespoke education and training programmes that support women with maintaining optimum mental and emotional health, looking at themes such as selfcare and raising self-esteem.

It’s thanks to funding from key organisations that we can provide these opportunities for women and at the same time develop our own organisation.
Thanks to Arts Council England, The National Lottery Community Foundation, Groundwork and Comic Relief for being some of our past and current funders. We also thank local company AW Lymn for their support in our early days of setting up.
Since being established in 2019, by founding members Janet Rose and Jude Winwood, When Women Gather has grown into a well-known and respected organisation in Nottingham. Our first community-led project, ‘Making Time’ (funded by The National Lottery Community Fund), helped us to kick-start our vision for gathering women together in Nottingham under the banner of connection, learning and wellbeing.
Our project launch event saw 150 women enjoying inspiring talks and social time together in the prestigious Ballroom in the old Market Square. Here, we welcomed TEDx presenter, Sharon Roberts, to our line-up of speakers to really energise our kick-starter event.

We have pulled together even more so as a team throughout the pandemic and have curated our workshops and events to be of a ‘blended approach’. When permitted, we have been able to organise small gatherings with activities, and at all other times, we’ve resorted to operating online in a digital format.

With feelings of isolation and concerns for mental health on the rise, we needed to ensure we continued to meet the needs of our service users. Visit our ‘Projects’ section for details on our past and current projects.
